Foot and Mouth Disease : 11th August 2001 :
The Scottish Executive temporarily closed the Southern Upland Way and all other public footpaths on 27 February 2001 to reduce the risk of this animal disease spreading.

The following sections have been re-opened. Other sections are under weekly review, so bookmark the site and come again. :-

  1. The stair and path up from Portpatrick Harbour north to the Portpatrick Golf Course
(see The Way section 1). The rest of the Dumfries and Galloway section of the Way remains closed.
  2. The Borders Region section of the Southern Upland Way is now open
From Ettrickhead stile on the Borders and Dumfries and Galloway boundary east towards Over Phawhope Bothy
(see The Way section 10) to the end at Cockburnspath (see The Way section 16).
You are recommended to start from the car park at Over Phawhope Bothy and walk eastwards.

Please do not cross cultivated or grazing land, even by a path, until further notice, and avoid all farm livestock (cattle and sheep)
Most non-walking visitor attractions in Dumfries and Galloway and the Scottish Borders Regions are open for business as usual.
